An interesting wine you can call intellectual. Its appeal is as much conceptual as hedonistic. It's the opposite of today's soft, sweet fruit bombs, being bone dry and somewhat austere, showing a tightly knit tannic structure. With an explosive but controlled, central core of blackberries, it's a cellar candidate. It will be fascinating to try this wine after 2014.

Texture is this wine's best attribute — while seeming as round in the mouth as honey, it finishes fresh and clean. There's vanilla in the aroma, as well as earth and fruit in balance. Alcohol warms the finish with spice, substantial enough for roast veal.

It must be Iowa! Imagine this...lightly smoked sable fish filet (VitalChoice.com-the "chocolate" of fish) nestled on a bed of FRESH organic fennel, Mirai sweet corn, Viking purple potatoes, Elisa sweet onions, red peppers,grape tomatoes, purple carrots(slow roasted with fresh herbs in parchment) and served atop a cutting of baby arugula. There's more but get the idea? Wine pairing-Y. Rousseau Colombard "Old Vines" Russian River Valley 2009. Perfect pairing! Life is good.

I am a winemaker here in Napa Valley. I don't know if we've met. I recently had a btl of your 09 colombard and I LOVED it! Truly: great job. Just thought I'd let you know, from a winemaker that makes a lot of big cabs but has a soft spot for Austrian whites.
